What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration, or AMD, is the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 50. The macula is vital for clear central vision, and AMD occurs when the macula deteriorates through natural aging processes, making it more difficult to complete day-to-day activities like reading and driving.
The Primary Types of Macular Degeneration
Dry AMD
Dry AMD is the most common form and gradually develops as the macula thins over the years. While it shows no symptoms at first, dry AMD can lead to blind spots, blurry central vision, distorted eyesight, and increased light sensitivity in its later stages.
Wet AMD
Although wet AMD is less common than dry AMD, it occurs much more abruptly and needs immediate attention. Wet AMD results when unhealthy blood vessels block blood flow or leak fluid onto the macula, causing a more sudden onset of symptoms and vision loss.
